Remaining in my Home

January 24, 2012 - United Way
By Andrea Thompson, Executive Director

As more and more Randolph County residents are aging or are becoming part of the elderly population, priorities and needs change. One of the most important priorities to the elderly is remaining in their homes for as long as possible. Being at home feels safe and comfortable. But this is not an easy task for those who do not have family or friends close by to help with those day to day things that become difficult for those who aren’t able to get around that well.

Thankfully, the United Way of Randolph County partners with several agencies in the county who are trying to make staying at home a reality. Meals on Wheels provide nutritious meals to those who are homebound due to age or disability. The Randolph County Domestic Training and Referral Service offers displaced or unemployed people an opportunity to do odd jobs for seniors such as shoveling snow, mowing grass or cleaning out gutters. The Senior Companion program allows people to visit with and provide light duties such as housekeeping or running errands to seniors who cannot get out and about.

These services are vital in allowing elderly folks to remain comfortable in their homes for as long as possible. It is the kind residents of Randolph County who donate their time and effort or are offered a small stipend to help senior citizens throughout the community.

This is just another way that United Way helps its neighbors lead better lives.

What programs have you heard of that are making a difference in the community?

What other services does Randolph County need in order to help the community be successful in this harsh economic climate?
