Food For Thought

February 1, 2012 - United Way
By Cindy Hammer, Director, Catholic Charities, WV

Everyone knows that 2011 was a tough year economically. What you may not now is how many more people were unable to provide their families with sufficient food and nutrition last year, not to mention those who struggled to pay bills and even meet their family's basic needs.

Randolph County is fortunate to have Catholic Charities WV, which offers Emergency Assistance to the poor and those most in need in Randolph County. We provide food through our Wellness Works Food Pantry, utilities, rent assistance, medication assistance and gasoline for out of town Doctors appointments.

The Randolph County office has a dedicated group of over 45 volunteers each month, that service their neighbors with respect and dignity through our outreach programs.

Catholic Charities WV receives funding and donations from a variety of sources. The United Way, e-way, FEMA, The Diocese of Wheeling Charleston, St. Brendan and St. Patrick’s Catholic Churches, Bowden Family Worship Center, Church Women United, Armstrong World Industries, Freedom Bank, Elkins Fordland, Wal-Mart, Food Lion, Long John Silvers, Bob Evans, and many other generous churches and neighbors of our region who make private donations of food and money.

Families Served in Randolph County:

January through December, 2009 Families-2503 Individuals- 6723

January through December, 2010 Families- 2938 Individuals-8221

January through December 2011 Families- 3826 Individuals- 10,614

That represents an increase of 888 families and 2393 individuals in 2011
